BIX+ turntable


The BIX+ sings with a full-bodied and dynamic voice. Its basic character ensures that the BIX+ will stay as the heart of your vinyl playback system, unlike designs which pursue clinical levels of detail that impress at first but rob the music of its soul. Despite its modest selling price, the BIX+ will do full justice to 'super arm' and cartridge combinations. The advanced bearing design and platter, dual plinth and iso tuned feet create a system that puts the brakes on unwanted resonances.
First: extreme silence when stylus hits the groove.Second: loud and soft sounds explode from a silent background. Third: dynamics are unshackled.


Things we've found that matter most

platter: the platter is 40mm thick and weighs a bit over 3kg. Why not go for extreme thick for more mass and better flywheel effect? We do hear audible benefits with 40mm vs 30mm or 20mm but past 40mm there isn't much to gain but much added cost and complexity to manufacture. Thicker stock is less flat (acrlic sheets are made by floating in a pool of water), takes more machining and has more imperfections (bubbles/dull spots etc). The 40mm stock makes it possible to get minimal run out and best concentricity. Thick is no good if it wobbles! The BX+x uses the best grade of hd acrylic.

plinth: dual layer is better by a mile. We tried solid butcher block style and T-frame (which would have allowed 2 tonearms) but the two-level plinth sounds better. It may be counterintuitive but it just sounds better. Maybe it has something to do with feet and supports mounted on the bottom and arm/bearing mounted on top level providing some decoupling.

motor: We've stuck with the motor made in Holland. It's not cheap but still the best for the price - its excellent rotational stability and torque gives a meaty and immediate sound. The brushed DC motor design gives a little bit of swish (about 40db at 3cm) but that diminishes with time. We tried MANY motors and this one is the best - up to double the price.

pulley: brass is best. Noticeably better than aluminum or delrin/teflon.

belt: best is tape. If you can figure out a way to keep the ends from drifting apart at the splice would sure like to know. Otherwise thread belt as supplied gives good non-slip grip. Forget rubber belts. They vibrate with standing waves and inject a tune into your music.

motor pod: this is very important. Fastening the motor anywhere near the bearing/arm/base means directly coupling unwanted vibrations into the playback system. Keeping it in it's own mass-house is the only way to do it.

bearing: needs to move freely in a circular plane. Spinning the platter without the belt and watching how long it turns is NOT the ultimate measure of bearing quality. Drag from high viscosity lubricant and tight tolerances is desirable for rotational stability and damping flutter. Unique to the BIX+, lubricated is assured with spiralled channels cut into the spindle surface which constantly feeds lubricant back to the top of the bearing where it's most needed. Bearing is supported on a polished ball at the same plane as the pulley. This means no off axis chattering such as when bearing shaft rests on ball at the bottom of a bearing well.

feet: 3 for stability, tuned to isolate from the frequencies most destructive to vinyl playback.

Het geïnverteerd lager bevat een zeer glad gepolijste keramische kogel. Op deze kogel rust de bovenkant van het lager, echter binnen de bovenkant van het lager is een teflon plaatje. Hierdoor wordt draait het plateau heel makkelijk en wordt het zwaartepunt verplaats naar beneden, bovendien maak dat de lager erg stil.
De loststaande DC motor is van Nederlandse makelij en wordt gevoed door een geadvanceerde transistor controller. De spanning voor de motor wordt geleverd door kleine adapter met stekker. De motor is geplaats in een soliede aluminium houder, die rust op 3 kunstof voetjes. De gekroonde katrol kan een snaar van bijvoorbeeld rubber, vislijn of band aan. De keuze is aan u.
De BIX wordt standaard geleverd met 3 arm basissen. Rega/SME of Morch. De basis van de draaitafel bestaat uit 2 hoogwaardige acrylaat platen die onderling ontkoppeld zijn. 3 Poten schroeven in de onderste acrylaat plaat, terwijl het lager en de arm bevestigd worden aan de bovenste plaat.
 
De BIX is beschikbaar met of zonder een arm. De Rega OEM arm (RB250) is in zijn standaard vorm, zondermeer de arm met het hoogste waarde voor geld gehalte. Met betere bedrading en een simple structurele modificatie. (Zoals de Michell Tecnoweight) en eventueel een VTA afsteller is deze arm zelfs in wereldklasse armen gezelschap niet verlegen.

Er wordt onderzocht of de BIX draaitafel nog in productie is ????
