Reference A/V Series DENON AVP-A1HD, POA-A1HD and AVC-A1HD
High End Meets High Definition
Curtain up for the three newly developed formula A1 top performers from DENON: the multi-channel pre-amp AVP-A1HD, the 10-channel output stage POA-A1HD and the A/V integrated amplifier in the reference series – the AVC-A1HD – reserve a place in the first row of sophisticated high-definition home cinemas for film and music aficionados. Technological highlights such as the video processor REALTA T2 and numerous HDMI ports with all the advantages of the latest specification 1.3a all help to ensure that concerts and films can shine with breathtaking sharpness down to the smallest detail even on large projector screens. However, the engineers have also done their utmost to ensure superb sound: exclusive D.D.S.C. HD circuits, an audio decoder for HD sound formats such as Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and the best Audyssey room calibration system of all time, create an ideal basis for an absolutely high-fidelity acoustic experience – just like artists and high-end enthusiasts yearn for. To make sure this elation is maintained for years to come, superb workmanship, innovative multimedia/network ports and convenient upgrade options guarantee maximum future-proof capability.
When DENON overhauls its reference series eleven years after the première of the legendary A/V pre-amp/output stage combination AVP-A1/POA-T2/T3, only the best is good enough. The new home cinema giants are uncompromisingly orientated towards a terrific rise in requirements in the age of high definition, but they also retain the proven benefits of their predecessor models. As a result, the entire high-resolution, discretely designed circuitry is accommodated in an ultra-stable metal cabinet with absolutely sturdy baseplates and aluminium sides. The interior structure follows three principles which DENON believes to be basic prerequisites for the finest sound and brilliant pictures: minimum vibration, minimum interference and minimum noise.

Interior Structure of the A1 Series
Achieving such ambitious objectives starts with well-conceived, physical design. For example, in the A1 series any vibration-prone components and potential "troublemakers" such as the high-performance power supply unit transformers and the large-size metal heat sinks, black anodised for optimum heat dissipation, are fixed to the chassis baseplate itself, in the direct vicinity of the feet, because as we all know, that is precisely where the cabinet is sturdiest. Furthermore, the developers silence the main transformers for the critical audio signal path by fitting additional metal baseplates. In the reference pre-amp stage AVP-A1HD and the A/V integrated amplifier AVC-A1HD the low-loss toroidal transformers are also accommodated in a shielding case which protects the adjacent circuitry against the influence of electromagnetic interference. What is more, even the power supply is designed to reduce detrimental signal harmonics. The effort has never been so high: just the power supply unit of the THX Ultra2-certified AVP-A1HD on its own consists of seven transformers and a total of 16 independent power supplies. (POA-A1HD: 8 transformers, 24 power supplies; AVC-A1HD: 6/15). Each circuit section, such as audio, video, CPU and display, is supplied by at least one separate mains transformer. Additional secondary taps ensure that further independent power supplies are also possible within the various sections, thus reducing undesirable interference between the various channels and disturbing ground parasitics to an absolute minimum.
Modular Design for Top Reproduction Quality and Maximum Future-proof Capability
The quality-enhancing principle of separation continues seamlessly throughout the downstream circuit design. Each separate area is given its own board. The arrangement of the boards within the structure is such that the individual areas cause no interference to one another. In addition, the new circuit design shortens signal paths to an absolute minimum. With this precaution the developers keep a tight rein on noise. There is another advantage though: if any technical advancements should one day make it necessary to change a board, the modular design makes subsequent upgrades easier to implement. After all, DENON wants to provide its premium customers with maximum future-proof capability. In addition to block formation the separate-channel audio circuit design throughout also accounts for a large part of the superb sound quality of the A1 series. With its completely symmetrical audio signal processing the pre-amp/output stage combination in particular sets standards in terms of resistance to interference. As a result, the pre-amp stage AVP-A1HD shines with an XLR input (CD) and 9.3-channel pre-amp outputs, which, in the professional XLR version, make contact with the XLR sockets of the freely configurable 10-channel output stage POA-A1HD.
10-Channel Output Stage POA-A1HD
The 60 kg, THX Ultra2-certified power plant of the A1 series owes its absolutely high-fidelity amplification to an elaborate mono design which allows each channel its own board. Supplied by an amply sized, separate-channel power supply including super-fast bridge rectifier diodes (current peaks of up to 250 A) and filter capacitors exclusively specified for DENON (20 x 10,000 µF) the discretely designed high-performance amplifier circuits deliver 300 W per channel across 4 . The completely free assignment of output stage channels opens up all the options of a top-quality speaker drive desired in the high-end home cinema, for example bi-amping (separate amplifiers for woofers and mid-range tweeters of up to five speakers). Owing to the A/B switchover also provided it is also possible to connect up another surround sound speaker set to the robust, solid brass screw terminals – for sound projection to a second room. And anyone who is able to stretch the home cinema to its limits is bound to be pleased that in bridge mode (5 x 500 W, 4 ) each speaker in a typical 5-channel setup has two superb output stages at its exclusive disposal. As a result, the home cinema system as a whole can still perform competently, without any signs of distortion whatsoever, even at impressively high volumes. Incidentally, the controlled output is displayed on three attractive, disconnectable volume indicator instruments, which can be assigned to the desired channels using buttons.
D.D.S.C. HD Audio Digital Circuits Enhanced Again
The reference pre-amp AVP-A1HD and the pre-amp section of the A/V integrated amplifier AVC-A1HD altogether play their way into the Champions League of acoustically superior A/V components due to discretely designed 9.3-channel pre-amp circuits and a D.D.S.C. HD (Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit for High Definition) exclusive to DENON. There are no less than three high-performance 32-bit floating point DSPs available for perfect digital audio processing, as opposed to the D.D.S.C. HD configuration in the AVR-4308, which only has two. A SHARC processor decodes all modern multi-channel sound formats, including lossless HD standards such as Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The second computing genius exclusively looks after the post-processing and equalizing, whilst the third SHARC-DSP makes all the THX Ultra2 corrections (THX Ultra2 post-processing) for optimum adaptation of film soundtracks mixed for large cinema halls to home cinema requirements and, for example, systematically prepares 5.1-material for 7.1-channel reproduction. Furthermore, the Advanced AL24 Multichannel, exclusive to DENON, enhances sound quality on all channels yet again. An additional FPGA chip accommodates integrated circuits and algorithms for upsampling digital music signals to a maximum of 192 kHz and boosting resolution to 24 bit. Incidentally, in the AVP-A1HD, analogue multi-channel input signals also benefit from the exceptional capabilities of the three DSPs and the AL processor. The reason is that the reference pre-amp stage features four A/D converters (4 x PCM 1804), which are operated in an elaborate differential configuration. Like the AVR-4308, the integrated amplifier AVC-1HD provides these top-quality 24-bit/192 kHz audio converters for no less than two analogue inputs. The sophisticated D/A converter concept of the new reference pre-amp stage is also setting standards. For the main zone on its own (Main) the AVP-A1HD provides twelve top-class, type PCM-1796 DACs arranged in a double differential configuration. The resulting output of high-precision, symmetrical 12-channel signals definitively ensures that the downstream output stage, POA-A1HD, is perfectly driven via XLR connections. The AVC-A1HD integrated amplifier entrusts digital/analogue conversion to the same converter modules from Analog Devices but contents itself with a single differential configuration (6 x PCM 1796; for comparison, the AVR-4308 has 4 x PCM1791). Both the AVP-A1HD and the AVC-A1HD support not only the Compressed Audio Restorer, which acoustically upgrades data-reduced material considerably, but also the Dolby Headphone, so even if you are watching a film with stereo headphones at night you are still able to create the desired impression of surround sound.
Enhanced Room Calibration System Audyssey MultEQ-XT with Dynamic EQ
The Audyssey calibration system, which has been enhanced yet again, ensures optimum sound in any home cinema room. Enhanced algorithms and a top-class genuine Audyssey calibration microphone included, with its vibration-resistant metal base, permit even more accurate calibration and room correction for eight listening positions. The also refined frequency response correction in the bass range (ALFC, Adaptive Low Frequency Correction) now supports three subwoofers.
But that is not all: the reference amplifiers in the A1 series now also feature Audyssey Dynamic EQ. This innovative technology also takes into consideration the frequency-dependent irregularities of human hearing and adapts the entire audio frequency response to the desired volume in real time. The crucial advantage is that as opposed to other dynamic hearing-dependent correction circuits Audyssey Dynamic EQ also entirely incorporates the acoustic properties of the room and the speaker characteristics, which is ultimately responsible for the superiority of this real-time frequency adjustment.
Professional 10-Bit Video Processing with REALTA T2 Chip from Silicon Optix
The fact that the newly developed, much more clearly arranged back panels of the A1 flagships feature more than meets the eye can best be illustrated by taking an example. With six HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs for simultaneously operating a projector and an HD screen (AVR-4308: 4 in/2 out) the pre-amp stage and the integrated amplifier in the A1 series are already open to the latest HD picture sources. The ultimate broadband digital HD audio/video interfaces conform to the latest HDMI standard (Ver. 1.3a) and provide CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) support for more convenient, cross-system operation. Video data with a colour resolution which is 64 or even 4,096 times higher (Deep Colour with 30 / 36-bit colour depth) is processed just as efficiently as signals with extended xv.YCC colour space, which covers all the colours perceptible to the eye. In conjunction with an HDMI 1.3a-compatible screen Auto Lip Sync also automatically compensates for any time offset between picture and sound.
The centrepiece of the high-resolution 10-bit signal processing section is, together with the REALTA T2 from the specialist Silicon Optix, precisely the same video processor which made a major contribution towards enabling the DENON DVD-3930 to be elected the best DVD player of all time in a number of surveys. The integrated HQV professional-grade technology admirably handles not only demanding picture management tasks such as de-interlacing and scaling of input signals to match all the modern HDTV formats such as 720p, 1080i and 1080p. For optimum image quality the unique HQV Noise Reduction uses pixel-precision single-frame analyses to distinguish between genuine movement and random noise. In this way any disturbing noise in SD and HD picture data can be practically eliminated without affecting the picture quality of moving objects. Top-quality 12-bit/216 MHz video D/A and A/D converters and a variable video up/down conversion with HDMI output (Video <--> S-Video <--> Component -> HDMI) ensure that the advantages of the REALTA T2 chip are also made available to older video sources without HDMI/DVI outputs.
Enhanced Multi-zone, Multimedia Support and Greater Operating Convenience
As befits premium-grade state-of-the-art A/V modules, the A1 series is by no means content with performing at a single venue, or to be more precise, demonstrating its virtues in a single room. Consequently, both the pre-amp stage and the integrated amplifier provide two 2-channel outputs (pre-out) for the additional zones 2 and 3, which, on account of the extra D/A converters, can also be used for outputting digital input signals (incl. network and USB).
Owing to the four freely assignable top-quality speaker terminals with robust solid brass screw terminals the AVC-A1HD also has at its disposal many different options for utilising the seven output stages. The latter can be used, for example, for bi-amping or for amplification of signals in zone 2 and/or zone 3.
On both models there are also other sockets such as video outputs for zones 2 and 3 plus an optical digital output with an upstream A/D converter for zone 2. As a result, home cinema freaks can set up a second home cinema in another room with another A/V receiver and take advantage of all the digital and analogue 2-channel sources (zone 2 theatre function) connected to the AVP-A1HD or AVC-A1HD. Digital component video conversion (Video <--> S-Video --> Component) for zone 2 is reserved exclusively for the reference pre-amp stage. Convenient on-screen menus for the home cinema in zone 2 are featured by both new products though.
To make sure the man or woman at the home cinema control centre is always in the picture despite the overwhelming possibilities, DENON has developed a very well-arranged, multilingual user interface (GUI), which is superimposed on all video signals up to and including 1080p. Since Album Art and user-friendly metadata display (title, artist and album) are supported, the audio and photo sources, such as DLNA-compatible media servers, are perfectly integrated into the new on-screen menus incorporated via the USB ports, the iPod Dock Control port, the LAN or Wi-Fi interface. The tidy back panel layout of the lavish connection panels minimises the risk of error during installation whilst thanks to the Audyssey calibration and room correction feature sound equalization and setup are largely automated.
In addition, the conventional hard keys of the teachable EL-Touch-Panel remote control are now also illuminated in the dark, which facilitates everyday use, as do three Quick Select buttons on the front of the equipment. This convenience feature makes it possible to call up frequently required, freely definable functions at the press of a button direct. A clearly arranged second remote control is included, providing the most important everyday functions (for all zones). Use of the bidirectional multi-room remote control system RC7000CI/RC7001RCI with a user-friendly display, radio/infrared transmission and a USB port is possible if required, as is integration into a centralised media control system via the existing RS 232C interfaces.
As already mentioned, the reference pre-amp stages AVP-A1HD and the integrated amplifier in A1 series AVC-A1HD are also state of the art in terms of multimedia support and home network. Audio and photo streaming from DLNA-compatible media servers (MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, AAC, FLAC, WAV and JPEG) broaden the entertainment horizon, as do reception of over 7,000 Internet radio stations throughout the world (MP3 and WMA) and support of music and photo reproduction from USB devices or – using an optional docking station ASD-1R – from an Apple iPod.
Furthermore, Internet access via the WLAN antenna or Ethernet interface of these high-tech A/V components offers additional fascinating options such as configuration and setup of the innovative A/V control centres on a PC monitor. After entering their IP address in the web browser (WebControl) advanced home cinema operators can control the AVP-A1HD and AVC-A1HD very easily using a PC keyboard and mouse. Without a doubt this "remote control with a difference" evolves its own science fiction charm. With their Internet access the new A/V products also serve to emphatically back up the philosophy of built-in future-proof capability. Integration into a home network is also facilitated by communication with the DENON server. As a result, home cinema aficionados can implement the latest software updates in an extremely simple manner. One thing is clear: anyone who invests in the three new products in the DENON reference series can rest assured that his A/V control centre will continue to be state of the art in the future and will give all it has got over a lengthy period – for example, a audio/video performance which simply makes even the most sophisticated viewers and listeners happy.
