dCS was started in 1987 by a group of consulting electronic engineers. We are located approximately 60 miles north of London near the university town of Cambridge. Our expertise lies in the design of analogue to digital converters (ADCs), digital to analogue converters (DACs) and their associated interface systems. Because of our track record, dCS is acknowledged as the leading converter design company in Europe. Broadly speaking our activities to date may be split into four areas:

Consultancy and Design
Most of this work is for military and sat comms and involves the design and implementation of high performance ADCs, DACs and signal processing . These applications require state of the art speed, accuracy and dynamic range. In most cases, the performance required is beyond that obtainable from "off-the-shelf " ICs, and we have taken advantage of an in house design team to produce our own hybrid and monolithic full custom ADC, DAC and signal processing ICs.
ADC/DAC Test Equipment
A consequence of making state of the art converters is that their performance often exceeds the abilities of standard test equipment. Consequently we have had to develop our own state of the art test equipment. This enables us to perform sophisticated dynamic measurements, that can characterise a converter far more effectively than is possible with conventional static measurement techniques. It also allows us to simulate the performance of new designs without the time and cost penalties of having to make an IC. We have used this expertise to develop in-house automatic test equipment to rigorously exercise and verify the performance of our professional and audiophile products before they are allowed to leave the factory. This ensures a level of consistency that would not be possible with manual methods. It also allows us to collect a large amount of data from the products, which when analysed enables the manufacturing process to be more closely controlled. The overall result is a better and more consistent product for the end user.

dCS has been involved in producing state-of-the-art studio ADCs since the company’s inception in 1987, and our dCS 900 series ADCs have become the industry standard with classical recording and mastering engineers, where transparency and fidelity to the original are of the essence. The expertise developed from our consultancy side has allowed us to design our own unique leading edge implementations, and thus keep ahead of our competitors who are dependent upon "off-the-shelf " ICs for their core components. dCS 905 The dCS 905 is a 2-channel 24 bit A/D converter, for conventional digital audio interfaces. It covers all standard PCM sample rates from 32kS/s to 384kS/s (including 352.8kS/s for DXD) and also DSD at 64 Fs (2.822MS/s).
dCS 907 The dCS 907 is a 2-channel 24 bit A/D converter, for conventional digital audio interfaces with conventional AES3 and SDIF-2 and 3 outputs, and also with IEEE1394 400Mbit/sec i/o.

dCS 974 The dCS 974 DDC (Digital to Digital Converter) is a very high performance and versatile unit designed for recording and mastering studios, where conversion between a wide range of digital audio formats and interfaces is required.

dCS 978 The dCS 978 ATM Sample Rate Converter is a high performance stereo unit designed for AES47 compatible ATM networked real time digital audio systems. The unit converts synchronous or asynchronous linear pcm audio signals into synchronous linear pcm signals, at any of the standard pcm sample rates. It also includes support for DSD.

dCS 995 The dCS 995 Master Clock is a high stability reference generator designed for studio and live recording applications. The unit provides reference clocks to support systems sampling from 11.025kS/s to 192kS/s or DSD, via AES3 or Word Clock formats.
dCS 998 The dCS 998 ATM Master Clock is a high stability reference generator designed designed for AES47 compatible ATM networked audio systems. The unit provides the 153.6 kHz multirate reference clock, as well as standard audio Word Clock and AES3 reference clocks to support PCM systems sampling from 11.025kS/s to 192kS/s, and DSD systems.
High End Audio Equipment
In 1996 we noticed that our dCS 950 professional DAC was becoming popular with audiophiles in Japan. They told us that they liked it because of it "had an analogue sound" and because, "it didn't sound digital". From this was born our move into the High End Audio market. Our first audiophile product, another dCS world first, was the dCS Elgar 24/96 DAC. It was first shown in June 1996 at the Stereophile Show in New York. The Elgar has since become the dCS Elgar plus, and in both forms gone on to win numerous awards around the world. The latest evolution of the Elgar plus, can accept PCM sample rates up to 192kS/s as well as Sony DSD format data via a IEEE1394 interface.
Our second audiophile product, the dCS Purcell Upsampler, like the Elgar, also evolved from a professional product. It was noticed that if the 16 bit 44.1kS/s digital data output from a CD transport was upsampled to either 24/96 or 24/192, using a dCS 972 professional DDC, very significant improvements in sound quality could be achieved. Most notably imaging, dynamics and fine detail resolution were all improved. In response to requests for a DDC that matched the Elgar in appearance and was also easier to use, we produced the dCS Purcell. Demand has been overwhelming and continues to outstrip supply. Latest versions of dCS Purcell enabling upsampling to DSD sampling rates. (2.822MHz.)
In 1999 we introduced the dCS Delius, a 24/192 DAC that set a new level of sonic excellence in its class. In the best dCS tradition the Delius offers more performance, more features and more upgradability. Like the Elgar plus the Delius can accept DSD data via a IEEE1394 interface, from either of dCS' CD/SACD Transports, or from dCS Purcell.
Our latest audiophile product is the dCS Verdi, SACD/CD Transport. When coupled to the Elgar plus, this produces the nearest thing to the master that we have heard and we have done the SACD vs Master comparision. In late 2003, we inrtoduced a new version of Verdi, the dCS Verdi La Scala, which uses processing power from our professional products, to enable upsampling to DSD sampling rates, from CD playback.
Following intense research on the effects of extremely accurate external clocking, we introduced, in January 2004, the dCS Verona Master clock. Verona is suitable for use with high quality digital products which use industry standard word clock interfaces, and incorporates features which further improve existing dCS systems.
