Klegg Audio was born out of the cutting edge technology of satellite communications. Back in the 1980's the satellite communication industry was in its infancy and Sat Comms were largely the reserve of state communications or television network broadcasting. At this time the most portable satellite transmitter station needed a 4 ton truck to move around and a team of operators. These 'Nodal Groundstations' not only cost a fortune but they were in short supply since only a limited number of experts were qualified to operate them. There was a big demand for a truly portable Nodal Groundstation which could be operated by a team of two people so TV news networks could file up to the minute reports from remote locations.
A small team of electronics engineers noticed this demand and went to work to see if it would be possible to manufacture a portable Nodal Groundstation for the TV news industry. Based in an unassuming house in Henley-on-Thames, UK, these engineers not only matched the existing technology of the day but succeeded in inventing a totally new approach to satellite communications resulting in the world's first truly portable satellite transmitter station: the SNG Services Mk1 Modular Portable Satellite News Gathering Earth-Station. This ad-hoc group of engineers had succeeded in doing what multi-billion dollar corporations had been unable to do and the system became an essential part of daily news broadcasts throughout the 80's and 90's.
It was not by chance that SNG were asked to consult on the acoustic performance of an innovative new speaker design. Satellite communications depend entirely upon the extreme accuracy of the satellite dish design. Frequencies are unforgiving, if the dish is out of alignment the transmission signal will be lost. Hence, who better to test a new technology within a curious 'egg' speaker design than an SNG engineer?
The concept was called Human Acoustic Technology (HAT) and initial testing of the 'egg' speaker proved so successful that was clear this innovative concept had immense versatility as well as performance. Home Theatre was becoming popular but most consumers thought they needed large floorstand speakers, so it was decided that a new company would be formed dedicated to innovative audio excellence from discrete but beautiful satellite speakers using technology gleaned from years of satellite research. The name of the company would reflect the company's debut product and that of its designer: the 'Kenneth Lam Egg', or KLEGG for short.
The Klegg M6-5.01 was launched in the Autumn of 2001 in London and was immediately recognised as a groundbreaking product. For the first time an audio company had taken the sub / sat concept and applied it in a contemporary form but managed to achieve exceptional sound quality. The Klegg M6-5.01 was undisputedly one of the world's smallest and most effective home theatre systems available.
Klegg continued to develop the M6 and soon after released the M6 501P decoder allowing instant home theatre by simply adding any dvd player. In 2003 the more powerful M8 501 was released featuring the same zinc alloy satellite enclosure material that had become synonymous with Klegg. Like the M6, the M8 turned heads wherever it was seen and quickly established Klegg as a true design innovator in the audio world.
At Klegg we haven't rested on our laurels. We have continued to develop our M6 and M8 speakers (the M6 is now in its third generation) but we have always strived to maintain the classic form of both systems. The M6 now features the M6 501PII decoder with Dolby Pro Logic II processing and the M8 is now available as an upgraded dedicated 6.1 system - one of the few dedicated 6.1 systems available in the market today.
Due to customer demand, we have recently released details of our first stereo speaker set the: KG-103s. These speakers not only provide exceptional sound but demonstrate the kind of build quality that Klegg customers have come to expect. Each speaker cabinet undergoes fourteen separate lacquer treatments before the speaker drivers themselves are mounted. The result is a high gloss piano finish that will immediately feel at home in any environment.
Klegg considers the future an exciting place - we are already working on products for release in 2006 and we might surprise you with what we have up our sleeve! In the meantime we are sure our current offering of audio products will satisfy everyone from the multimedia enthusiast to the discerning home theatre connoisseur.
